Thomas Reynolds

I would like to thank Thomas Reynolds, the director of the RAMC for allowing me to place a cache at the center. He is a great guy, and has done some Geocaching and letterboxing in the past. If you get a chance stop by and talk to him, he is very knowledgable and easy to talk to. If you are looking for ideas on how to be a better caretaker for the earth, spend some time at the center. It is a treasure trove of ideas about sustanability.

Bruno Borsari

I would also like to thank Dr. Bruno Borsari, a professor at SRU. I give him credit for a mental shift, something that allowed me to see the world in a new light. He has done a great job, and I think about the class all the time.

The Macoskey Center is an 83 acre facility on the campus of Slippery Rock University that promotes sustainability through demonstration, education, and research.

This geocache/letterbox is a traditional ammo can hidden within ten feet of the trail. I have provided you with clues rather than coordinates for a few reasons:
  • This eliminates the desire to bushwack, and is easier on the land.
  • As a letterbox also, I didn't think it was fair to use a gps.
  • A gps can sometimes become a security blanket. It allows for a slght mental shift, and better observation skills to do without it.
  • And it allows visitors to the center to find the cache without investing in a gps.

Because this is also a letterbox, there is a stamp inside the box. Please leave it inside.
If even after reading the above you still want to have the final coordinates I can't deny them from you. I would make the suggestion to try and use the clues first, then use the coordinates just to verify you are in the right spot.

Getting started


There is parking for several cars directly in front of the barn. If all spaces are taken park on the other side of the street. Once you are standing by the barn, turn right and walk past the front of the house, and turn left. You will see signs for the interprative trail. Each sign is about 3 feet tall and has an angled sign on the top. Two of them can be found at the corners of the harmony house. Use them as a reference to get you started. This area of the center can be very confusing, and is crowded with buildings and projects. Look for the small signs. Each sign has some interesting facts, and will give you a better understanding of what the center does. Once you pass the house, keep following the small signs untill you get away from the buildings.

Stay on the trail at all times. You will see that many areas of the center are being restored to a more natural state. this takes time, and it is not helped by bushwacking. Follow along, gaining knowledge as you go.

The clues

Use the above to get you on the trail. follow along all the trail a ways until you make it to the mature forest. This should be easy to find as it is right past the sign describing clues to the area's past farming history. It also has big trees. As soon as you cross over the creek (may be dry) start to count your steps. You should spot the creek because of the large stepping stones used when the water is high. Continue on for about 20-30 paces. You will have a large tree to your right. Directly behind this large tree are two fallen trees. Look inside the L formed by the two downed trees and you will find the cache.

Continue on along the trail as it loops back to the barn.
