This cache in Joppa is the fourth in our “It Happened One Day” historical series of Burnet County.
The community of Joppa was first named Pool Branch for the pooled water by a waterfall up stream near where the Pool Branch flows into the North Fork of the San Gabriel River. During the 1880’s the area boasted a cotton gin, a mill, general store, blacksmith shop, a ladies’ hat shop, school, and a church. 1904 was a big year when the first telephone line was strung, but it wasn’t until 1939 did they see electricity. The iron bridge was built in 1907 and was used until 1989. Go across the road to read the historical marker by the little church and community center.
Stories told around campfires are that trolls live under the bridge, and that at night you can hear someone breathing hard and running quickly across. Do you dare do this cache at midnight?
***** Don’t even think about getting on the bridge. It is unsafe and has locked gates blocking entry. *****
