Cache 101 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Weary Banker & Bookworm: This place is erie.

There is no birdsong here. No small animals scurry in the undergrowth. This place is as quiet as the grave that it probably was for the poor unfortunates of Hangman's Stone.

But yet there is a presence, a feeling of someone or something watching, waiting. This is not a place to linger. Not a place to leave a cache for others to risk losing their sanity. You can read in the logs what cachers have witnessed here and the things that will stay in their memories for ever.

We, ourselves, are not immune and each maintanence visit was worse than the one before and we took longer to recover. We wondered if, like Mr Hyde, we were gradually being taken over. That was until the last visit when we witnessed the power of the unseen thing. The area is now totally destroyed.

We are archiving the cache partly for our own peace of mind but also hope that this will break the spell and bring a peace to previous visitors to this place........ both living and dead.

Geocache Description:

THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF-- NAMELESS, UNREASONING, UNJUSTIFIED TERROR WHICH PARALYZES.......... (F.D.ROOSEVELT 1933)

Please read what follows very carefully.

Cache 101 takes it name from room 101 in the novel "1984". Orwell descibes the room as the place where you will meet your worst nightmare. No two people will have exactly the same fear-but it was amazing how many of our friends, who volunteered to try this, were affected by it. There is no explanation for it that we can fathom. Reactions varied from bad dreams to insomnia and even hallucinations in one case. In "1984", Winston Smith's nightmare was that his face was being eaten by rats. Can you remember your worst nightmare. Keep it to yourself !

Do not try this cache at night. Under no circumstances bring children to it. Please wait at a discreet distance, if you see another cacher at or near the cache. Everyone needs to face this alone.

Have you any phobias? Ophidiophobia (snakes) Arachnophobia ( spiders), even Xenophobia ( strangers )--are you sure that you have none at all?

Some carparking at mapref 50.42.888,003.07.801.

Continue along the A3052 and between Colyford and Sidford you will find HANGMANS STONE. Obvious care is required at this busy junction. Downhill at the Southleigh turning to the parking. Straight across the road from the parking and follow the footpath signed path. When you reach the right place turn right and as you approach the cache your GPS signal should return. Although the sun tries to dispel it, there is certainly an 'atmosphere' in the forest. Local rumour has it that the remains of the unfortunate victims of the gibbet at the crossroad, were dumped deep in these woods. Look out for the bats. One final note, please read the disclaimer and may be people of a certain disposition should not be here. Please be careful and remember that " if you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise ", but beware, it will be no picnic !!
