Geocache Description:

Raven Rock is located in Cooper’s Rock State Forest off of interstate 68 East of Morgantown, WV.

Park at 39 38.216 N X 079 48.083 W. Across the street there is a gated road (trailhead) that presents two approaches to this cache.

1. NOT Kid Friendly. Facing the trail descending the hill there is another trail on your right that heads into the woods. This is the way I prefer to hike in as there are many cool rock formations to explore along the way. If you take this route, when you get to the power line right of way, turn left following the power lines. This route isn’t used often so the trail is spotty but your chances of encountering wildlife are greater. This is not a trail for the very young as there is some boulder hopping that must be accomplished. Proceed to the waypoint 39 37.592 N X 079 48.018 W. It is a 0.8 mile hike to this point. CHILDREN UNDER 5 MAY HAVE A VERY DIFFICULT TIME ON THIS ROUTE. ALL CHILDREN ON THIS ROUTE WILL REQUIRE CLOSE SUPERVISION!

The second route, the one I take on the way out, proceeds from the gate down hill and is the shorter of the two routes. Follow the Raven Rock trail signs past two signs for approximately 0.5 miles to a noticeably damp spot in the trail ((39 37.693N 079 47.935W). To the right is an old logging road. The GPS will be indicating the cache off to your right. Follow the old logging road (During the heavy wet snow of 2005 while the leaves were still on the trees, many of them fell across this path. It is not easy to see the trail in some spots)to the waypoint. At the waypoint weave you way around the large boulder following the natural path. After passing between two very large boulders head to the left along a large rock wall. 42 paces later go right between two very large stones. You are now very, very close.

The Cache: The container is a large green painted Folgers coffee container. Contents: frog key chain; refrigerator magnets; toy cars; rubber ball; corkscrew-bottle opener; 911 commemorative coin; log with pen and pencil.

NOTE: This is a “day use” park and the cache should be avoided if there is the possibility of ice covering the rocks.

With either approach you must leave the power line right of way @ 39 37.592 N X 079 48.018 W

What ever route you take be sure to take in "The View" @ 39 37.276 N 079 47.936 W. There is another nearby cache on the way to The View.
