Backcountry cache just small hike off a forest service trail
Cache is just off of a forest service trail that allows snowmobiles/Hiking/cross-country skiing in the winter and ATV/Motorcycles/Bicycles/Horses/Hiking in the summer. Opens May 30th to vehicular traffic. Container is a small Tupperware box with a white lid. This cache is easy to find. Depending on where you start your trek, the going could be easy or tough. Half the fun is picking the best route to get there. There are many options and this geocache can be approached from many sides of the mountain. It is a 2800ft ascent from the bottom Rat Lake trailhead(4 miles on a rocky trail which is mostly up hill). Be careful when looking for the cache as it is is rocky terrain with ledges/holes near the cache. If you like to overlook the entire Gallatin Canyon, the location of this cache is very scenic and worth the trek. You will not be disappointed with this view. Nearby is the Garnet Mountain Lookout Tower which can be rented, for overnight stays, from the Gallatin National Forest Service. I would recommend heading up there to see the view while you are here. There is also another multi-cache in the area that I placed called the Pioneer Lake Challenge. Check it out and do both if you have the time and would like a more difficult challenge.
