Due to the “Techno-geeky” nature of geocaching, I feel I’m safe in assuming a high percentage of geocachers are also serious sci-fi fans. This cache is for you. The cache is intended to provide cacher sci-fi fans with a means pick up a book that is highly recommended by other cachers, and in turn to foist their cherished favorites off on others. I’ve prestocked the cache with a ten of my favorite sci-fi books to get things rolling.
My preference is to focus the cache on lesser known books, rather than the acknowledged classics that probably everybody has already read, so keep that in mind when selecting a book to leave. I don’t expect anybody to part with their out-of-print treasures (nobody’s going to pry my copy of John Myers Myers’ “Silverlock” out of my hands!), but try to bring something good. The books need not be literary masterpieces or critical darlings, just bring something that you really, really liked and leave a note here on the cache page telling us what you liked about it, if you care to. Serious, funny, silly, anything is OK as long as you enjoyed it, but please have mercy: no dragons and wizards stuff (start your own fantasy cache, if you like!), or - Heaven forbid - Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. books unless you’re under the age of 13. (OK, so call me a snob - It’s my cache!)
I will update the cache contents list to reflect current contents as books are added or removed. Here is the current lineup:
First finder’s prize: $10 gift card redeemable at Borders or B. Dalton books.
“Ender’s Game”, by Orson Scott Card.
“Friday”, by Robert Heinlein.
“The Integral Trees”, by Larry Niven.
“The Warlock in Spite of Himself”, by Christopher Stasheff. (actually sci-fi, despite the fantasy-sounding title)
“Voyage from Yesteryear”, by James Hogan
“Lest Darkness Fall”, by L. Sprague de Camp
“Up the Line”, by Robert Silverberg
“Earth”, by David Brin
"Zero Hour", by Benjamin Miller
"Man-Kzin Wars VIII"
The cache is a large green ammunition box. There is sufficient room for about 15 books total. Please don’t leave anything other than books, travel bugs, or tokens, I don’t want McToys to crowd out the books. As you can infer from the cache name.
PARENTS NOTE: It’s your responsibility to make sure any book you take is suitable for your kids. I’ve made no effort to tailor the list for any specific age group and I will not screen books as they are added, so caveat parentis if you cache with kids.
The cache is located in a series of nature trails at Ralph Richardson Community Park in Commerce Twp. Parking is available at:
N42 34.219
W083 28.353
Follow the nature trail. Please ensure that the cache is rehidden well and obscured from view from ALL directions. These trails are frequented by joggers, especially on lunch hours and weekends.
I've placed the cache very close to an established trail to minimize impact to the landscape. I took both a Magellan Meridian and Garmin GPSMap60C along for the hide. The Garmin was flat on its back brain dead due to tree cover, but the Meridian was happy as a clam. Garminites beware: you may need to bring a friend with a Magellan. See the rest of the trail system on your way out, especially down by the lake.
