Shaw Wood...Bluebell Wood...Basil Wood...All are familiar names for a 28 hectare broad-leaved woodland northwest of Armthorpe village. Officially known as Shaw Wood, it is made up of three adjoining areas. The oldest part of the woodland is Armthorpe Shaw which was recorded as a wooded site over seven centuries ago. Streetthorpe Shaw was added in the late eighteenth century when the manor of Armthorpe belonged to the neighboring Streetthorpe estate, now Edenthorpe. The youngest of the woodland trio is Corporation Shaw planted around a hundred years ago.
The wood was brought by Doncaster Council in November 1985 to ensure its survival as a valuable site for wildlife and for people to enjoy.
