Geocache Description:

Three hundred years ago near Albany there was a village call "Tronateeska" in Creek which meant "flint picking up place". Over time the name became applied to the river that ran near the village. Few boys that grow up in West Central or Southwest Georgia reach adulthood without having had some close connection with the Flint River or its tributaries.

The Flint begins as a trickle beneath the runways of Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport and runs south to its terminus at Lake Seminole near Bainbridge where it joins the Chattahoochee to form the Apalachicola which flows to the Gulf of Mexico. The watershed of the Flint covers 8,460 square miles of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain and is clearly divided into three unique riverine regimes. The upper portion runs from its origin to where it crosses the Fall Line near Culloden. The middle portion extends from the Fall Line to Lake Blackshear near Cordele. The lower section runs southward through Albany to Bainbridge.

There are only forty rivers in the U.S. that flow more than 200 miles unimpeded. The Flint flows unimpeded for nearly 220 river miles which makes it unique. That would not have been the case had Governor Carter not personally blocked the Army Corps of Engineers' efforts to construct a dam at Sprewell Bluff near Thomaston. As a result the Flint continues to flow freely through one of the most naturally beautiful and ecologically diverse sections of Georgia.

At Sprewell Bluff the river cuts through the eastern most remnants of Pine Mountain. Just downstream Class III and Class IV rapids can be found where the river plunges more than 70 feet in elevation over a 2.5 mile stretch. At Yellow Jacket Shoals the river drops almost 40 feet in a 1 mile stretch.

Below the Fall Line lies the Great Swamp that extends all the way to the city of Montezuma. The Great Swamp is actually two swamps. Magnolia Swamp lies north of Ga. Highway 96 where this cache is located. Beechwood Swamp lies to the south of the highway. This is an area of flat head and channel catfish, freshwater mussels, bream, bass, whitetailed deer, hogs, beaver, turkey, otter, squirrels and black bear. South of here at Montezuma Bluffs, a part of the Fort Valley Plateau, fossilized oyster shells are embedded in the high bluff.

The river does not encounter any impediments until it reaches the dam of Lake Blackshear near Warwick. Here the lower river basin begins to cut through shallow limestone. There are numerous springs feeding the river in its lower portion. Discharge from Radium Spring below Albany can exceed 70 million gallons a day. Cave divers have explored and mapped some of the larger underwater cave systems which can extend for thousands of feet and open up into hugh caverns.

The river is home to many forms of animal and plant life some of which are quite rare and unique. The shoal bass is a prized catch on the Flint.

A few miles on the river north of this location one of the more important and least known figures in the early history of our country oversaw all Indians affairs south of the Ohio River.
