Geocache Description:

BACKGROUND:

When author Emily Bronte completed her dark and brooding Gothic masterpiece Wuthering Heights in 1847, little did she know that her first and only novel would someday be regarded as one of the pinnacles of 19th century literature. In fact, the intriguing tale of revenge in which the main characters are controlled by consuming passions, was once considered such a risk by its publishers that Bronte had to defray the cost of publication until a sufficient number of copies had been sold.

The classic novel is now taught in high school and college literature classes worldwide. The story has been adapted into countless plays, radio dramas, and movies. The most recent such adaptation came in 1992, with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes starring as Catherine and Heathcliff, and vocalist Sinead O'Connor appearing briefly as Emily Bronte herself.

THE LOCAL CONNECTION:

When prominent entrepreneur and co-founder of Texas State Optical Ben Rogers donated land to the City of Beaumont for development as a park, he did so with one stipulation: that the space be named Wuthering Heights Park. The novel, it seems, was a favorite of his beloved wife Julie. The city, grateful for the donation, cheerfully complied with his wishes. The park, which recently received a brush-clearing makeover, features a one mile walking trail.
