Geocache Description:

Located on a new trail in the Wai`anae Kai Forest Reserve. Area is open to the public for hiking and hunting. Wear BRIGHT colors to be safe.

The cache is located deep in lush Wai`anae Valley. You won't see the "lush" until you are about 1/2 hour up the paved road. Drive to the left end of Waianae Valley Road and park outside the Forestry gate. LEAVE NOTHING VALUABLE IN YOUR CAR. A comment on that thought is I have not seen any sign of break ins at this location, but it always pays to be safe.

I advise starting as early in the morning as you can, as the road walk can be a killer in the hot Wai`anae Sun. Also there is drinkable water to be had at the two Board of Water Supply wells in the valley. You can go light on water until you reach the wells and then fill up your containers. Or be safe and pack it up from home.

Since my first valley cache (The Jack Fruit Cache) is such a long walk I decided to place another cache in the area. I advise doing both on the same day. When you find this cache I advise you to return the way you came out. The trail does continue in a loop to where you left your car, BUT it is still under construction and although it is ribboned you still could get LOST up there.

After you find the Jack Fruit Cache return to the paved road. If you don't want to do the Jack Fruit Cache continue up the dirt road where the paved ends. At the end of the dirt road you'll find a shelter and picnic table. Continue onto the trail staying on the ridge the road is on. You'll pass thru a grove of Macadamia Nut trees. After passing between two large rocks the ridge narrows to a few feet, but is very safe. Stay on this ridge for about 5 minutes and you'll see a trail going off to the right. Follow this trail in and out of 3 valleys. The cache is in the 3rd valley.

You'll know your in the right valley even if you have GPS problems because of the overstory of trees. You'll see the huge rock POHAKU NUI to the left of the trail. (See Picture) The cache us up stream about 100 feet. It sits on a very large rock covered by other rocks. (Again See Pictures) PLEASE BE SURE THE CACHE IS COMPLEATLY COVERED ROCKS BEFORE YOU LEAVE. THE TRAIL IS USED BY HUNTERS AND WE DON'T WANT THEM TO DISCOVER IT.

When at the cache site PLEASE SHOW RESPECT FOR THE SITE. I believe this pohaku oozes MANA! Look on top of it. You'll see a good size rock on top of the big pohaku and to me it looks like it was placed there, notice a few small rocks under it to sort of level off it's top. There might be some cultural meaning to this. PLEASE SHOW RESPECT!! MAHALO.
