Geocache Description:

Traditional cache in a scenic location overlooking Lough Derg. From the village of Portroe drive towards Ballina, then follow the signs for 'The Graves of the Leinstermen'. BEFORE you reach the graves stop at the small carpark at N52.51.224 W008.23.459. It's a 20 minute walk along a well marked path to the location.
The cache is on Laghtea Hill according to the map, though the locals refer to it as Cloneybrien Hill. Watch out for a bit of gorse (whins or furze bushes to some people).

Cache is a plastic tablock box concealed under a concrete block. Original contents - keyrings, erasers, pencil sharpener, plastic ball, notebook and pencil.

While you are in the area you might like to visit The Graves of the Leinstermen. Back to your car and continue up the road a short distance to a large, ugly aerial. The graves are a series of rocks half hidden in the scrub across the road. Not much to see but the views across the lake are excellent. On a fine evening you may see the sun reflecting off Galway Bay and even the hills of Connemara(50 miles away) . Look west across the lake, and through a dip in the hills in the middle distance.

You can combine this cache with the nearby 'Hillwalking for the Lazy' (GCV636). If you are feeling energetic climb the hill above the Graves. A rough track will bring you to the top of the hill and close to the cache. Alternatively you can drive round the back and up the hill. There are more great views, including back towards the Silvermines, Keeper Hill and Limerick City.

After all that exercise you will probably want some refreshments. Drive back to Portroe and down to the lovely lakeside harbour of Garrykennedy. There are two fine pub-restaurants.
