Geocache Description:

A short walk to a view of the damage and recovery from the Jasper Fire.

The Jasper Fire burned for 2 weeks in the late Summer of 2000. It consumed 83,508 acres of land managed by Jewel Cave National Monument and Black Hills National Forest. It was the largest fire in recorded history of the Black Hills.

The cache is an ammo can placed atop a hill that gives a view of the damage and recovery of Hell Canyon and the surrounding area. If you wander to the edge of the hill you will make out the Jewel Cave Vistor Center in a circle of trees that were saved.

The cache is about 300 yards from the national monument boundry. DO NOT scale down into Hell Canyon from the cache area. If you really want to see it first hand, they have a nice trail that starts from the visitor center and goes through the canyon below. There is no entrance fee for the park. They only charge for cave tours.
