Geocache Description:

This geocache is Thales/Magellan's "Be There" GPS Adventure #26 of 2005.

This cache was initially listed ONLY on the Magellan site. It is only now that the mysterious clues have been solved by the contest winners that the cache is allowed to be posted on Geocaching.com. The hider of the cache was also a mystery to the first finders. The container was initially well-stocked with cool items and prizes from Magellan. I will replenish trade items and provide maintenance for this cache as the need arises.

Congratulations to Silly Wabbit and GeoScouts and gladeslvr & crew for being the first geocachers to BE THERE!

Please visit Magellan's Be There website to read all of the journal entries associated with Adventure #26.

Have fun!

Clues from the Magellan Contest

Journal Entry 1

Hungry

Tired and hungry from our latest Adventure, I was ready for a feast. Mom and Dad were hungry too. Mom pulled me aside for a moment to tell me how proud she is of me. I was a little embarrassed. I don’t think I realized how much my turning 13 had affected her. “Are you sure you’re up to the long journey ahead of us?” she asked motherly. “There’s nearly 1200 miles to travel across the States and through the Jungle, and another 825 to search.”

I assured her that I was ready for the challenge. I picked some flowers for her and she ate them.

Guiding light

“Be careful of the sharks, gators and Buffett fans,” Mom told me as we set up camp along the edge of the serene bay. Her feast of flowers hadn’t stopped her from mothering me. Sitting around the camp fire, Dad told cryptic tales of the ancient Order of Magellan like he often does. He held an old tarnished musket in his hands as a prop. He told of a seminal civilization that thrived in this area for 12,000 years and left behind very little evidence that they had ever existed. He told of a treasure of the Order that could be found near here and how the torch of Santa Marta went up in flames in 1836.”

Buried Treasure

Without much to go on, we spent the morning at the water’s edge, swimming, fishing and enjoying the Adventure. Suddenly, I stumbled on something buried just beneath the sand. I called Dad over to help me. As we dug around the small object, I saw the edge of what appeared to be a pirate’s chest! I thought it was amazing that we had found the treasure without even looking. Carved into the side of the old chest was the name “Cap’n Flint.”

Dad pried the rusty latch open as Mom and I looked on in wonder. As the chest opened there was bright reflection. My eyes focused to see some old key from 6 years before I was born. It had on it a horse and some monogrammed initials. “Well, that’s disappointing,” I said. Then Mom put her arm around my shoulder and pulled me in close to get a better look. “No, this is the key to more than just a city,” she said. “Look at the initials: S.B. and think about the pink flamingos!”

“Wow! That means absolutely nothing to me, Mom,” I said with more than a little sarcasm.

Oh, and there was some old soggy book in the box too. It was called “My Early Life.”

Journal Entry 4

Duet by Churchill and Hammer

Sitting around with Mom on the beach, bored without anything to do, I decided to check out the soggy old book. It was wrapped in some sort of palm leaves. I tossed them aside. I let the book dry out for a while till I was finally able to open it without shredding the pages. The writer was some dead guy named Winston Churchill. The name seems kinda familiar. He must have been someone important like an actor or a singer.

Inside the cover was an inscription. I read it out loud: “To my dear friend, Franz. I hope this Jungle never has to be moved.” “But it was moved!,” Mom exclaimed as she examined the palm leaves intensely. “Do you know what this is?” “An old wet leaf?,” I replied. Mom continued without a beat; “This is tlapattram. It’s extremely rare. You probably wouldn’t be able to find it. It comes from Sri Lanka and is very unusual for this part of the world.” Mom beamed for a moment as she continued to gaze at the leaves and then she looked up; “Do you want Adventure? I know where the treasure is! Let’s BE THERE.”
