Geocache Description:

Event Date: September 24, 2005

Join us in beautiful Western Maryland for the Maryland Geocaching Society's 2005 Fall Picnic at New Germany State Park, put together by our Western Maryland friends TrailGuy, AdamWalworth, Tonsil, Eithnie, Basssax, Luv-to-Hike, and Chere.

The event is FREE, and EVERYONE is welcome! Please bring a dish to share (post a "Will Attend" log if you're planning to come, along with the dish you plan to bring.) The event will be rain or shine! It's a good idea to put the event on your watchlist in case there are any updates. Unfortunately the park does not allow pets.

Join us at 11am for a day of fun including caching, talking, eating, and friendship. We'll also have a brief "business" meeting to go over what's happening with the MGS. Several new caches will also be placed for the event. We'll be in the Lake House Shelter which provides a fanstastic view of the lake!

"Popular for picnicking and camping, New Germany State Park lies within the boundaries of Savage River State Forest. The 13-acre lake was formed when Poplar Lick Run was dammed for mill operation. This impoundment, known as Swauger's Mill Dam, was named for mid-nineteenth century sawmill and gristmill builder, John Swauger."

Camping arrangements can be made by phone 1-888-432-2267 or online. There are spots for tents, campers, and cabins are also available. If you choose to camp and are using a tent, consider "tent pooling" with someone since most sites are built to handle two tents. You can also choose local lodging through any of the hotels available.
