Please trade only items
containing metals, and tell us what type of
metal you left :)
Metals are such wonderful thing! You can find them in the
ground, refine or extract them from other materials, or even
combine them with other metals to make metal cocktails! Metals make
up most of the things we use! Here are just a few of the
interesting naturally occurring metals...
Rhodium is most notably used in the catalytic system of
automobile catalytic converters.
Arsenic was used in the past to pressure treat wood.
Since arsenic is toxic, you never want to cook with pressure
treated wood!
Lithium salts are mood stabilizers used in the treatment
of bipolar disorder, since unlike most other mood altering drugs,
they counteract both mania and depression.
Lutetium is a silvery white corrosion-resistant trivalent
metal that is relatively stable in air and is the heaviest and
hardest of the rare earth elements. This element is very expensive
to obtain in useful quantities and therefore it has very few
commercial uses.
The extremely high temperature at which magnesium burns
makes it a handy tool for starting emergency fires during outdoor
recreation.
Manganese is essential to iron and steel production by
virtue of its sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying properties.
Steelmaking, including its ironmaking component, has accounted for
most manganese demand, presently in the range of 85% to 90% of the
total demand. Among a variety of other uses, manganese is a key
component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain
widely used aluminium alloys. It is also added to gasoline in order
to reduce engine knocking. Manganese(IV) oxide (manganese dioxide)
is used in the original type of dry cell battery. Manganese dioxide
is also used as a catalyst. Manganese is used to decolorize glass
(removing the greenish tinge that presence of iron produces) and,
in higher concentration, make violet-colored glass. Manganese oxide
is a brown pigment that can be used to make paint and is a
component of natural umber. It's also used in chemistry and
medicine as disinfectant agent.
In metallurgy, Chromium is used to impart corrosion
resistance and a shiny finish to stainless steel. It also produces
a green color used in plating, dyes and paints.
Lithium is widely distributed but does not occur in nature
in its free form. Because of its reactivity, it is always found
bound with one or more other elements or compounds. It forms a
minor part of almost all igneous rocks and is also found in many
natural brines.
Beryllium is used in the making of gyroscopes, various
computer equipment, watch springs and instruments where
light-weight, rigidity and dimensional stability are needed.
The cache is in a popular park, however you'll have decent cover
when recovering the container if you schootch in.
Happy Hunting and please be sure to rehide the cache well as there
are many muggles about!
Original contents includes one or more of: gold, silver, tin, steel
(iron + carbon), iron, manganese dioxide, brass (copper + zinc),
copper, silicon, carbon steel, aluminum, aluminum sulfate, lead,
silicon dioxide
*** UPDATE 8/7/2005 ***
A traditional cache was placed within a mile of the final
coordinates. Just incase you find it while looking for this cache:
0) Cold, you are in the wrong location & will not find it here;
but don't forget to log this cache too
1) the Metallurgy container is a
snapware like container, 2) has cache name on the inside of
the lid, 3) the cache name appears on the logbook in metallic
ink! Happy caching! --rk
*** UPDATE 6/1/206 ***
Replaced the container. Please take a minute to rehide the
container well when done! Water level is much lower and safer now,
so I reduced the Terrain Rating to 2.
