Geocache Description:

This multicache is set around the historical market town of St Ives.

The first Anglo Saxons arrived in St Ives when the settlement was known as Slepe (meaning 'muddy'). Around 1000AD a ploughman discovered a stone coffin containing bones which the landowner, Ramsey Abbey, declared to be those of St Ivo, a Persian missionary. During the 17th and 18th centuries St Ives became an important waterway route bringing coal from the port of Kings Lynn and returning with corn. Parking for the cache is plentiful except on Mondays which is market day. The above co-ords are for suggested parking in the large car park of the Dolphin Hotel, for which there is a charge of £1. If you buy a coffee or other beverage in the hotel, you will obtain a token for the barier free. To enter stop at the barrier and follow instructions and the barrier will rise automatically. You are asked to collect numbers from various points of interest about the town and record them so that you can compose the final cache location. If you look above shop window level on your journey you will see lots of evidence of fine buildings, once private, but now put to commercial use.
