Family friendly traditonal cache located on Excelsior Pass with beautiful view of Mt. Baker.
There are two ways to the top of Excelsior Pass. You can follow the directions below or find the trail head from highway 542 and climb the switch backs.
(1) Green Trails, Mt. Baker, WA - No. 13. Also, the guide book called, "100 Hikes in Washington's North Cascades National Park Region", has a description on p. 36, hike #4.
(2) Make sure you have a NW Forest pass or a vehicle parking pass prior to driving up Canyon Creek Road. You can obtain the passes at the Glacier Park Service Center for a $5. You can also get current trail info while your at the ranger station.
(3) Round trip from Canyon Creek road trail head is approximately 5 1/2 miles, hiking time 4 hours, high point 5712', elevation gain 1435', hikable mid-July through September. Hiked it with three novices (my two nephews and niece from Texas who had never hiked before, ages 14, 10, and 7) when we placed the cache - we made it up to the top of High Divide in three hours and down in two hours. All three did well.
(4) Fantastic views on a clear day of Mt. Baker, the North Cascades and into Canada land. Well worth the hike. One of Two Wolf and Angus's favorites....
