This cache is situated on Gaff Point which is one of the last undeveloped headlands on the South Shore in a highly scenic area enjoyed by many. The point is a natural refuge, encircled by rugged shale outcrops, hideaway coves, cliffs, coastal forests and barrens. Gaff Point is a nature preserve, protected through the efforts of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy, and the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, which are non-profit land conservation organizations. You will see a NCC sign at the trailhead and a KCC sign a bit further down the trail.
This is one of our favorite places to hike as there is a little bit of everything to enjoy, the beach, the scenery, the sounds, the woods and much more as you will soon see. The trail to Gaff Point can be very narrow and dense in some places as well as close to the cliffs so please be prepared. Hirtle’s Beach is a beautiful long sandy beach and a great place to spend time before and/or after the hike. Pack a picnic and take a snack with you on the hike. The entire loop is appox. 6.0 km so a good place to take a break is at the very point. Be sure to take a few minutes to erect your own Inukshuk.
To get to Hirtle’s Beach turn South off of Hwy 332 at Rose Bay onto Kingsburg Road, turn right onto Hirtle’s Beach road and follow this road right to the end which will take you to the parking lot for the beach.
Use the posted coordinates to find an information plaque and from that you will calculate the location of the cache. On the plaque you will find the number of acres of wilderness preserve in the form of XXX.
Calculate as follows:
ABC = XXX - 24
DEF = XXX - 100
And then substituting into: N44 15.ABC W64 17.DEF.
When you get to the end of the beach look for the big round rock sitting atop of the sand, inland from this you will find the trailhead. Once you are on the trail there is no need to bushwhack or scale cliffs, please be respectful and appreciative of the land owners and stay on the trail.
The cache is hidden right on the trail.
We thank The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) (www.natureconservancy.ca) and the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy (KCC) (www.kingsburgconservancy.org ) for there approval of this cache.
