Royal Palace of Maelmin Traditional Cache
Longfram Kev: Time for this cache to go. I'm not able to maintain this cache due to the distance from home and work commitments so I'm going to archive it. If things change I'll try to unarchived it at a later date. Thanks to all who visited and kept me up to date with its condition.
Thanks Kevin

Maelmin Heritage Trail and Henge is situated in the middle of
Milfield plain, part of the Till Valley. This lies at the edge of
the village of Milfield, in north Northumberland, just off the A697
trunk road. The landscape surrounding this reconstructed Palace of
Maelmin is rich in archaeology, some of it dating back to 10,000
years ago.
The main features of the Trail are the two full-size archaeological
reconstructions. One is of the wooden Milfield North henge monument
which was built in the spring of 2000. The first portion of the
henge was built by a team of volunteers living as Neolithic men and
women and using only the tools that would have been available at
the time.
The second reconstruction on the site is a faithfully copied
Mesolithic hut, the original hut was excavated in the summers of
2000 and 2002 at Howick, near Alnwick, and yielded evidence of the
best preserved hunter-gatherer settlement yet found in England.
There is also a short walk with information boards along the way.
The trail depicts life in the Cheviot Hills from the dawn of time
to man’s occupation throughout the ages. The information trail is
laid out so that you follow it through time, starting through the
gate to the left in the car park.
A trail guide can be purchased from Milfield Country Café and Store
across the main road. They also do nice tea and cakes. The Maelmin
Heritage Trail is open daily dawn till dusk and is free.
Behind the site is a small airfield where you can see small planes
and gliders taking off and landing.
THE CACHE IS NOT ON THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE BUT TO ONE SIDE
