This cache has been archived.

Raven Pop: This cache has survived much longer than I had anticipated. I think it's time to archive it. Thanks to all that successfully followed the paces and directions and found it and re-hid it properly. Raven Pop

Geocache Description:

INTRODUCTION: The people of Salem were, in my opinion, "good thinkers." They used the resources that were available and were not wasteful. This LETTERBOX cache is a tribute those those earlier settlers that molded the city in which we now live.

LETTERBOX: This is a LETTERBOX HYBRID geocache. Letterboxing is a precursor of geocaching, using compass bearings or other clues to lead the seeker to the letterbox. The cache contains a logbook and a stamp. If you wish, you may stamp your personal journal with the rubber stamp in the letterbox (cache); then you may stamp the logbook with your personal stamp if you have one - if you don't have a stamp, just sign the logbook. But, please be sure and leave the stamp, logbook, and inkpad in the container.

In addition to your GPS, you will need a compass to find this letterbox hybrid geocache. You will also need to bring your own pencil; and, if you have a small rubber stamp and a journal, bring those along too.

The letterbox is a small rubbermaid container about 6" x 6" x 2 1/2". In returning the letterbox, please make sure the lid is on properly to prevent moisture buildup. Also, be careful and replace the letterbox (cache) exactly as you found it so that it will remain available for others to enjoy.

FINDING THE LETTERBOX: This letterbox hybrid is called "Good Thinking!" and I hope you think wisely in your quest to find it.

Park at the listed coordinates. This is a good street parking location (be sure and obey the parking on one side of the street only signs).

You should be standing in front of a marker post. This is known as Lot 90. In 1832, Christian Federick Denke and his wife Maria Steiner Denke, built this as their retirement home. Federick had served as the minister of Hope and Friedburg Moravian churces. This was the second house built on Factory Row.

From this sign post, walk south along the side walk, passing the Ackerman house, for a distance of approximately 115 double paces (a double pace is counted each time the same foot hits the ground).

You should now be standing in front of another sign post with information about the "Brewery." The brewery is no longer here. Because of financial problems and the inability to secure a brewmaster, the facility closed in 1805.

From the "Brewery" sign post, walk on the sidewalk in a direction of 90º along a split rail fence for approximately 27 double paces. You have now reached the paved walking trail.

Begin walking south along this trail for approximately 127 double paces crossing over a wooden bridge. Stop in the center of the walkway.

Face west, and walk about 10 double paces. The letterbox you are seeking is located at the base of a hollow tree near the creek.
