Geocache Description:

This is a picturesque mountain lake with a black sand beach and is partly surrounded by craggy peaks. Bring your fishing rod!

This will be part of several caches located at high mountain lakes and peaks. These present more of a challenge and may require a day trip but they are very satisfying both from the effort and the scenery. The container is a 4” X 12” PVC pipe and contains some nice items. Most of the items in my caches are donated so don’t hesitate to trade up.

This lake could probably be approached from the Indian Creek drainage but I have only hiked in from the Branham Lakes via the trail to the saddle from the Upper Branham Lake. I estimate this route is about 1.5 miles. If you have marked your starting point at the upper lake parking area and want some different scenery, a direct route back should be about a mile give or take a little wandering.

Gneiss Lake is about 9,560 ft (2,913 meters) and is about 5 acres. Depth is unknown but I suspect there might be a current in the lake because I once watched a big black thing (a log perhaps) rise to the surface and then sink again several times. You could expect to see rock chucks, deer, elk, moose, sheep or goat and maybe bear including grizzly. The lake definitely has fish. I would watch the weather carefully and avoid thunder storms. Have fun.
