This Root Cellar and the “Garden of Remembrance” are about all that is left of the State Hospital which was locally known as The Epileptic Colony. In the first half of the last century those residents that were able to, would work on the farm and raised most of there own vegetables. This Root Cellar was used to store the vegetables through the winter.
Bring a flashlight and camera but I don’t think anyone should try to enter the cellar because it doesn’t look structurally safe. The entrance is blocked off except for a small hole that you can see into the cellar.

The farm also had a heard of Dairy Cows for milk. Behind the dairy barn, in the pasture there was a cemetery where the deceased residents were buried. The graves had only a small marker with a number on it until sometime in the last half of the last century when a big fuss was made about it, and the State was pressured into placing grave stones with the names on them. This was the origin of the Garden of Remembrance which is about 0.12mi from where the Snow Mobil Trail crosses E Rum River Dr S.
