A traditional cache near Cutthroat Pass which is along one of the
most scenic parts of the Pacific Crest Trail. There are two routes
to Cutthroat Pass, the shorter of which is from the PCT trailhead
north of (across from) the Rainy Pass trailhead on Highway 20 at
milepost 157.6. This hike is 10 miles RT with an elevation gain of
just under 2000' on a good trail.
The cache is about 500' from Cutthroat Pass and the PCT in an ammo
can. Via Rainy Pass the hike took us 6 hrs roundtrip.
To get there from the other access, the Cutthroat Lake Trail, turn onto Forest Road 400 which is 25 miles west of Winthrop and about 4 miles east of Washington Pass at milepost 167. Follow it for 1 mile to the
trailhead at 4500'. This hike has 2500' elevation gain and is approximately 1 mile longer. Both routes can be found on Green Trails Map No 50-Washington Pass, Trails # 2000 (Rainy Pass) or #483(Cutthroat Lake Trail).
Please note that one of the Recreation Passes Of The Northwest (Northwest Forest Pass or Golden Age/Golden Eagle Passport) is required for parking in either of these parking lots.
This highway is closed for the winter. Best time for hiking here is July through mid-October.
