Geocache Description:

A short hike along the Reef Townsite Trail. Distance 650 meters; elevation change 30 meters.

Follow Carr Canyon Rd. (FR368) to the Reef Townsite Campground. There is a no fee parking area opposite the campground entrance. Road may be closed during winter months.

Reef was a mining camp from the 1880s to the early 1900s. Miners sought silver, gold, and tungsten here. The Reef Loop Trail begins at the rear of the campground, between spaces 10 and 11. The trail features interpretive signs along its route describing historical points of interest, and photographs of the structures that once were here. The trail provides views of Carr Peak, the Carr Gorge, and Sierra Vista. The trail desends into a ravine, then goes past an old mill site, before returning to the starting point.

NOTE...Carr Canyon Rd. is a narrow one lane mountain road; rutted, rough, and rocky with many switchbacks. A 4WD or high clearance vehicle is recommended. Remember that the vehicle going uphill has the right of way.
