Located deep in the rolling hills of East Alabama, Auburn
University is one of the nation’s premier land grant institutions.
In 1856 the university first opened its doors as a private liberal
arts school established by Alabama Methodists. A single four-story
building was later completed in 1859 at a cost of $111,000. This
building, then named Old Main, was used as a Confederate hospital
from 1864 until classes resumed after the war in 1866. When fire
destroyed Old Main in 1887, it was replaced on the same site in
1888 by Samford Hall, named after Alabama's governor, William James
Samford. Today Samford Hall serves as a symbol of Auburn’s rich
heritage and the university's administrative headquarters.
Just about everyone is aware of Auburn’s athletic and academic
accomplishments. Its engineering, veterinary, agriculture, and
architecture programs are world renown ... obviously, Auburn plays
a little bit of football as well. :) Did you know Auburn is also
home to one of the highest ranked public school districts in the
nation? Over the years, Auburn High School has averaged seven
National Merit Semifinalists in each senior class of approximately
300 students. On the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the
American College Test (ACT), Auburn High School students
consistently score above the state and national averages, and are
regularly in the top five in the state in ACT and SAT test scores.
Upon graduation from high school, approximately 80% of Auburn High
School graduates continue their education by attending colleges,
universities, and technical schools. Demographics Daily recently
designated Auburn as “a small dream town, offering high quality of
life to all residents.”
Today Auburn University is the largest university in Alabama,
with an enrollment between 22,000 and 23,000. Students hail from
all 67 Alabama counties, all 50 states, and nearly 100 foreign
countries.
