Maillardville was named after Oblate priest Father Edmond Maillard who was the first parish priest of Our Lady of Lourdes when the new church opened it's doors Dec 10 1910. Located in the heart of Maillardville, the only identifiable Francophone settlement west of the Rockies, the church and the nearby community centre has been the hub of the region for over 100 years. French Canadians played a crucial role in the exploration and development of British Columbia and they were well known as explorers and pioneers. Indeed, 4 of these "Voyageurs" accompanied Alexander Mackenzie in 1789 in his search for The Western Sea. As each outpost was established, many of the first inhabitants were often French Canadians, and, as civilized life came to the outpost in future years, these frontiersman moved on to less populated parts of the country. Some of them stayed on in the new towns, a large contingent of them stayed in the small settlement in the wooded outskirts of New Westminster. This settlement would come to be named after the first priest of the parish, Father Maillard. The cache is a medium size Lock & Lock painted black. Enjoy this pleasant diversion into the heart of one of the oldest communities in British Columbia.
