Geocache Description:

Welcome to the most heavily used wilderness area in Oregon: The Eagle Caps! The cache rests at 8550 feet which is a bit higher than Howard Mountain near Wallowa Lake, but not nearly as high as Matterhorn, Sakajawea peak, etc. From the vantage point you will be overlooking quite possibly the most popular lake in the basin area (Mirror) and Upper lake. To the west Minam lake, and Blue lake, one of our personal favorites. The cache container is a lock-n-lock.

View of the Lakes Basin from just below Carper Pass

Carper Pass is part of what is termed the Lakes Basin Management Area in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It is toward the southernmost boundary of Wallowa county and can be accessed from many different directions, the easiest being from Two Pan campground (about 16 miles roundtrip). The cache was placed on our backpacking adventure from Wallowa Lake to Moss Springs above the town of Cove, a five-day 45 mile trip. Our second day's dinner was enjoyed at the cache site as we contemplated the 2500 foot elevation gain on the day. Be prepared for some heavy breathing!

3 closeby mountain peaks include Brown Mountain (8944ft) and Glacier Mountain (9169ft) to the northwest. Eagle Cap (9572ft) is to the southeast. Please come prepared to do some cache maintenance since finds will normally be 10-12 months apart. Ziplocks and log paper especially.

Note: Permission was obtained for this cache when it was placed on 8/2/05. Wilderness caches such as this one require permission to be approved by groundspeak.
