Geocache Description:

Whittier was the home to the US Army's Alaska command starting during WW2. Following the war, this was the departure point for our forces headed to the Aleutians to protect against the impending Red menace. Whittier's enlisted men were housed in the Buckner Building, which was later abandoned in 1960.

Rumor has it that one of these long forgotten soldiers based on a remote island in the Aleutians, looted an ancient Inuit religious site. The Inuits found out and chased him all the way back to Whittier before catching up with him on the dock one night. Needless to say, that soldier wound up swimming with the Halibut.

Anyway, most of the cache was recovered, except for the most cherished item, a sacred idol of their navigation god. Local legends persists that he stashed it somewhere close to where he lived just before ...............

Small note on cache maintenance: BenGeo'en has agreed to be the local maintainer of this cache. Thanks!
