Geocache Description:

Parking spot by a bridge.

The River Coquet, 40 miles in length, rises in the Cheviot Hills, flows northeast, and enters the North Sea at Amble. Coquet Island lies just off the mouth of the river. This series of caches will take you to some interesting places along the course of the river, always through terrific scenery.

In the January of 1945 an exercise was being carried out on the river Coquet in which an assault boat capsized hurling ten men into the water where they drowned. All were 18 years old and had just returned from home leave. War time restrictions prevented the story being told.
In 1995 some local people felt the event should be remembered and they employed a local craftsman to make a wooden cross which was placed on land adjacent to the river. However in due course it was felt a more permanent memorial should be made and placed alongside this first mark of remembrance. A sandstone block, was installed with a plaque affixed to remember the 10 soldiers.

Our Rivers can be dangerous as well as beautiful - take care at all times.
