Geocache Description:

An easy cache on the Lake Ontario shoreline.

This almost forgotten monument was dedicated to the first Superhighway in Canada, the Queen Elizabeth Way, or QEW for short. This monument used to sit proudly in the middle of the QEW, marking the start of the new highway in Toronto, at the Humber River. The architect was W. L. Somerville, and Frances Loring was the sculptor. There is another similar, but not exact, monument in St. Catharines, still alongside the highway.

In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (known better as the lately departed Queen Mother) came to Canada on the eve of World War II, and dedicated the new road during their visit. Their visit to Canada was the first by a reigning British monarch. This monument commemorated that occasion. In 1974 when the QEW was widened, the monument was moved to its present location in Sir Casimir Gzowski Park. Up until then, traffic reporters frequently mentioned the famous landmark ("traffic is bunching up at the monument"), but most motorists have forgotten, or never knew about the momument. Those that do remember might be "Wondering Where The Lions Are" (as Bruce Cockburn sang in his hit song).

Fifty years after the original ceremony, on July 6, 1989, the Queen Mother returned to Canada and revisited the grand monument. There is a small plaque dedicating that visit too.

If you wish to see some old photos of the King's and Queen's visit, and how the monument and the QEW looked in the 1940's, check out the following links:

Just for interest's sake: get a load of this photo taken in 1954 -- people parked on the shoulder of the QEW back then, so they could spend some time at the nearby Jordan Harbour Park! (visit link)

The cache contains only the log sheet. Bring your own pen or pencil.
