Geocache Description:

This micro cache (35 MM Canister) is located in one of the earliest settlements in Pickens County, Alabama - Yorkville. The early settlers were preceeded by even earlier explores. In 1843, John H. Alexander plowed up a shield and a pair of copper scales engraved with "Hispana" on his farm near Yorkville proving to most that the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto passed through Pickens County in the 1540's. Legend has it that DeSoto and his men spent a winter on the hill where the Ethelsville Baptist Church stands today. Ethelsville Baptist Church is the oldest church in Pickens County with its orignial roots beginning in 1824 as the South Carolina Baptist Church. Yorkville was later renamed Ethelsville after Ethel Burgin Hancock (1887-1901). The town was moved one half mile from its original site when the M & O railroad was built in 1898.
