Parking for this cache can be found
at N42 57.706 and W089 30.807.
This Multi cache starts in the off-leash portion of the park
with rolling hills and well-maintained trails, then proceeds to the
wilder, on-leash section. If you are averagely knowledgeable about
dogs, and/or lucky, you should be able to complete this hike in
about 2 hours. Though multiple trips may be required. At each
waypoint you will find a set of cards with questions, answers to
the last waypoint's questions, and the next set of questions, and
maybe pictures to identify. When asked to identify a breed, the
number of letters in the name of the breed of the dog is the answer
to the letter indicated on the card (subtract 10 if 10 or greater).
Don't know your breeds? Bring a breed identification guide or
decode the hint to get a list of possibilities. Answers will give
you the next waypoing coordinates in the form of: N42 57.ABC
and W 089 30.DEF.
As in all Dane County Parks, there are a few rules.
1) Each dog must have a permit, available at the self-registration
kiosk just inside the entrance to the park. A daily pass for an
individual dog is $3.00. ($20 annual – multi dog discount
available) valid at all Dane County Parks
2) PICK UP YOUR DOG'S POOP. Pick up bags are available near the
entrance. Waste containers are near the entrance and various
locations along the main trail.
3) Please bring dogs that are well socialized and not in
season.
4) No fence-hopping.
5) In the on-leash portion to the park dogs MUST be on leash. I
suggest a short leash as you will enter the woods.
There is NO water or restrooms available. Please bring water for
you and your dog.
None of the waypoint locations is very difficult to find
although more challenging with an inch or two of snow on the
ground, or heavy brush growth. This is the biggest and busiest dog
park in the county, watch out of muggles. All but the last
containers are simply ziplock bags with laminated cards inside. The
final is a 7.62MM Ammo box. Please bring something dog-related to
exchange (no treats). Trails will take you almost all the way to
each waypoint, though they might not be the most direct route.
Between WP5 and WP6 there is a sensitive area that a trail used to
go through, but following the main trail (even though it seems to
go away from and past it) will get you there.
This cache has been authorized by Dick Black of the Dane County
Parks Commission and the proper permit issued on 4/11/05. Permit
has been renewed for 2006.
If you search with a geo-dog, please include his or her name and
breed in both the cache and on-line logs, pictures are always
welcome.
May you and your canine
have at Doggone Good Fun in Verona!
