Located on New Longton Moss a short half mile along a dirt road.
Our first cache… and we chose the location for 2 reasons… An urge to use an unusual name, and to kindle interest in a little documented possibly historical site! We hope you find the location interesting even though there is sod all there!
The spot is the site of the long gone Sod Hall and the adjacent ‘Round House’ (N53 42.720 W002 44.555) which was occupied until 1983 when it was destroyed in a storm. The wattle and daub thatched round house which was often confused as being Sod Hall itself, used to be a tollhouse collecting tolls of a penny per wheel for carts using the dirt road called Sod Hall Lane to pass over Longton Moss to Leyland.
As a lad in the ‘50s I lived in nearby Whitestake, and ‘our gang’ often went exploring to ‘The Round House’ peering through the high surrounding hedge, probably to the annoyance of Mr Halliwell it’s resident at the time.
After the storm damage, my friend worked for the local authority at the time, and had responsibility for ‘dangerous structures’ and much to his dismay had to organise it’s demolition. There was not as much interest in preservation then, and the best record was a few photographs taken by his assistant, and a visit from the national archaeological archivist, who told my friend that only one other example of this type of structure existed in the country!
Both us and my friend are very interested in it’s history, and if you are able to add more to our information please email us.
You can get to the cache from either end of the dirt lane (a public footpath only) and I suggest you park in the lane at N53 43.043 W002 44.500 and walk the last 0.4m.
Or from the Leyland end at N54 42.170 W002 44.130 using Jane Lane and the railway occupational crossing (watch for trains!) (0.8m)
The original cache was 'removed' by a Muggle or Muggles unknow in October 2005, so at the time we replaced it with a micro some distance away. However it seems that some weeks ago the original cache magically returned, along with the contents! Why, or how, remains a puzzle as no entry has been made in the logbook. In view of this we have now removed the micro and transfered it's (damp) log to the original cache box, which is now in the original location. The published co-ords and clue have also been adjusted to match. Please ensure you re-hide well.
