Geocache Description:

This is the grave site of Captain William Hillhouse a Revolutionary Solder.

William Hillhouse was born on March 18, 1760 near Land's Ford on the Catawba River in South Carolina.

While residing in York District, South Carolina he enlisted as a volunteer in December 1775 in Neil's SCML and served at various times in the War effort. He served fourteen months as a private, five weeks as a sergeant and three weeks as lieutenant. He served under Captain Thomas Kirkpatrick and Joseph Woods, James Jamison, Colonel Thomas Neil, Andrew Neil, and William Braton during the war. He served at the battles of Briggins Church, Williamson Plantation, Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock. At Hanging Rock his commanding office Captain James Jamison was wounded and he was appointed Captain and served under Colonel William Bratton. He also served in the battle of Camden Ferry, Sumpter's defeat, Fort Granby Catawba Ford, Granby Fort, Big Savannah, Wrights Bluff, Fort Watson and Black River Fort. He served as Captain under Colonel Bratton until April of 1781 when he resigned and began serving under Captain Frame Woods until October 1, 1781

In the years following the Revolutionary War the Hillhouse family had relocated to Marengo County Alabama and then to Oktibbeha County where he died on April 28, 1848. The Hillhouse descendents still live in the Eupora area so I'm told by the local members of the (SAR) Sons of the American Revolution Chapter. If anyone in interested in joining the local SAR chapter e-mail me and I'll tell you where we meet and when.
