Geocache Description:

A chance for members of the UK Geocaching Community to give something back to the environment from which we get so much enjoyment!

Nette, Sarajayne, Fruity&Doggit and Mancunian Pyrocacher invite you to join them and Kim the Land Manager for BHPBiliton and Alex the Flintshire CC Ranger for Talcre Dunes SSSI. To do some Dune Maintanence Work and CITO.

Talacre Dunes SSSI home to GCHR93 and a area of Natural Importance is slowly being reclaimed into a natural state by the removal of invading trees, shrubs and grasses. With the aim of incuraging the local wildlife to flourish.

To aid in this we intend to spend approximately 4 hours working in an area cleared of invading shrubs, removing small roots and branches. Also clearing areas of the Dunes of bindweed which takes over from the native grass.

Afterwards we will retire to Talacre Caravan & Leisure Park, who have very kindly allowed us the use of their concert room for chance to have a bite to eat and a drink.

Now for the details

We will meet at the coordinates which are for the Car Park at the bottom of Station rd, at 09:45 where we will receive a brief safety briefing from Alex the Flintshire CC Ranger. Before heading into the Dunes. As we are strolling to the work area, we we do some CITO. Once at the work area we will divide into 2 groups, one will commence the clearance of the Scrub area, the second will begin removing the Bindweed from the Dunes. After approximately 2 hours we will stop for a break, and both groups will then swap jobs.At approximately 13:50 we will stop all activitys and collect all rubbish together ready for collection.

We will then proceed to Talacre Caravan and Leisure Park, which is located next to the Dunes. Where we will have the use of the concert room

The following menu will be available at a discounted rate of £5 per meal

  • Tender Breast of Chicken, cooked in red wine with Shallots & Mushrooms
  • Tender Welsh Steak braised in ale
  • Mushroom Ravioli cooked in a White Wine sauce topped with mozzarella & ricotta cheese

Main courses are served with a selection of seasonal vegetables & potatoes

A Children's menu will be available with 7 different selections to choose from at a cost of £3.95 per meal

During the after event get together we will be holding a Raffle of Geocaching related goods, the proceeds of which will be going to Hope House Children's Hospice

The Organisers are pleased to announce that the magnificent sum of £120 was raised on the day for Hope House.

we would like to thank the following for their fantasic contributions to the event

  • Everyone Who Attended, for all the hard work they put in
  • BHPBiliton for allowing to hold the event in the Dunes, and who donated a Fortnum and Mason Hamper as a raffle prize
  • Kim Norman BHPBilitons Land Manager for all the help she gave us in setting things up and her colleague Sam, who both worked extremely hard on the day, and provided refreshments during the break.
  • Mr McCalaster the owner of Talacre Caravan and Leisure Park, and his staff. For providing accomadation, use of the Entertainments room, the donation of 2 bottles of bubbly for the raffle.
  • Martin Talacre Caravan Parks Entertainments Manager, who ran the Raffle and the Chair Bingo for us.
  • Mike Taylor Ranger Manager for Flintshire CC's Countryside Service, who worked extremely hard on the day.
  • The Air and Sea Cadets and Their Officers who worked like Trojans with us.
  • Eryl House and her colleagues at Flintshire CC Operational Sevices Department. For providing Pick Up Sticks,Bags,Gloves. And for arranging for the effortless removal of the rubbish collected.

All the Willow which was cut down on the day, will be collected by Chester Zoo, where it will be given to the animals as forage, this is a more natural choice than feeding them grass. So the days work has had a double impact in that it has helped the Dune environment and the wildlife present, and has also benifited the wild life at Chester Zoo.
