Geocache Description:

This cache is on a beautiful large rock that is in the shape of a whale when viewed from the south side. It is located north of Fort Bragg just off Highway 1.

It needs to be LOW TIDE in order to climb this rock and find the cache (or you WILL get wet) so check out the free tide tables at mobilegeographics.com. There is public parking and access to this beach .9 miles north of "Ten-Mile River." Upon entering the beach area, the rock will be at the south end, just before you get to the outlet of the river. You must climb the rock from the ocean side (thus the low tide requirement) and scramble up a somewhat sharp rock face. The top can be a little tricky, so please be careful, especially with children (my 11 and 9 year old had no problem climbing it but I stay right next to them).

Please practice "Tread Lightly" and "Leave No Trace" principles (treadlightly.org and LNT.org). The area on top has some beautiful wildflowers and delicate plants – do not walk on them. There is a short path to the cache that you can stay on. Enjoy the spectacular view!

This is a favorite spot for my family, and we have spotted whales and enjoyed great sunsets from this area. Marriages have been held at the rock arch just to the front of the main rock's "nose" and has been referred to as "Cathedral Rock."

Try to maintain the whale/sea theme. Original contents included 2 sticker sheets (marine theme), painted beach rocks, seagull feather, toy dog, compass, origami crane, a ribbon from a wedding at Whale Rock, shells and various "sea treasures." Have fun at the beach!
