As of 11.11.05, New location, new coordinates, new container, new size. Hidden with the intention of being hunted as a pair with Toppercat's "Road to Nowhere" (GCQ4TC)
I was very happy to learn of Toppercat's road to nowhere hide. It was my intention to hide one at this location to call attention to the history of this road only he beat me to it. At Toppercat's suggestion I have hidden one at the other end of the road. This will provide a great pair of hides with at least 2 good ways to go about the search. I suggest you hunt and find Toppercat's "Road to Nowhere" (GCQ4TC) first. Then hike the old road to the other end to make the find on this one. There are a pair of roughly parallel trails following the old road through. Keep your eyes up and follow the hole in the canopy. The other option is to hunt either one from either end. Both ends offer options for parking. Park at either and hike the hunt to the other. (This is why you are out of the house in the first place isn't it?)
The neat natural aspect of this hide is that 20 years ago when the road was shut down the highway department put barriers up at both ends. The road was not torn up. Nature was just left to take the road back. Slowly over the past 20 years the road has vanished. The barrier was removed from the north end as the need for it went away. The barrier remains at the south end as the road exited out onto Rand right next to the river and there is/was a saftey issue as I'm sure you can imagine.
One of my favorite books as a kid was a book called The Wump World by Bill Peet. Peet was an illustrator for disney and I can still see all the pictures in my head perfectly. It doesn't hurt that I have read it to my kids for years too. The story is about a community of small peaceful forest creatures, the Wumps, who inhabit a clean peaceful planet. The Pollutians invade their planet and take it over, ruining the unspoiled wilderness. When they abandon the Wump world in search of a new planet to ruin the wumps come out of hiding looking for grass and trees and slowly nature comes back to the trashed planet. This road and it's story always makes me think of this book. Get it from the library (save a tree) and read it to a kid. You will enjoy it yoursellf as a cacher too.
This cache is a cammoed peanut butter jar on a wire.
Happy hunting.
