Geocache Description:

Cache is at a Memorial for my husband Jim Stahlman who died in May of 2004.

UPDATE 05/10/2024: I had to move this one a bit to a more secure location as I think the weather up here is brutal. I moved it in the saddle of the two peaks, in a natural hole, covered with rocks. You shouldn't miss this as any geocacher who sees the pile of rocks will say, "There it is!". There is no writing stick so bring your own!

I uploaded a picture of the route and elevation to help you decide if you want to attempt this hike.

[Original text] It took me 2 hours to get to the cache site! I had sworn after climbing it years ago I would never do it again! I must be nuts but I did it again! Jims best friend Gary had put a memorial stone up here for Jim and he wanted me to see it. This small mountain was named after Jims grandfather who was the first District Ranger in the Detroit area under the newly formed Dept of Agriculture for the Forest Service 1906-1911. The lookout, now removed, was built in 1946. Several times, during his Forest Service years, Jim was a lookout at this station. He was raised in Old Detroit, the site is now under water, and as a teenager helped moving the old town to its present site. His family home is now a coffeehouse/Deli in Detroit. The cache is at the very peak of the mountain and you will need to take the Stahlman Point trail all the way. Because this is a strenuous walk I am going to lead you right to the cache. When you get to the very top, where the concrete floor is, look toward the town of Detroit and you will see a stone marker bolted in a fir tree with ‘1938-2004 Jim Stahlman’ on it. The cache is in the rock in a crevasse at the closest point to the marker. Be very careful. It is medium size and wrapped in a black plastic bag. Replace it carefully. Winters can be harsh and hard on caches up here. The Stahlman Point Trail (#3449) is a moderate 2.5 mile trail. Occasional viewpoints of Detroit Reservoir. Trail ends at former lookout site, overlooking the reservoir and the towns of Detroit and Idanha, and providing a nice view of Mt. Jefferson to the southeast.. No drinking water. Forested, second-growth and old-growth. Good variety of shrubs and woodland plants. : Last 200 feet are steep and rocky, watch your footing. Children and pets should closely supervised at lookout site Directions from Detroit: From Detroit Ranger Station travel east on Hwy. 22 for 4.5 miles; turn right onto Blowout Road #10; go about 3.5 miles to trailhead. Coords for trailhead are approximately 44.42.411 / 122.09.671 Beginning Elevation: 1,800 Feet (561.1 Meters) Difficulty: Moderate Trail, steep, but has good walking surface. Elevation Gain: 1,245 Feet (388.1 Meters) Ending Elevation: 3,045 Feet (949.2 Meters) Length, One-way: 2.5 Miles (4.17 Kilometers) Had a bit of trouble with the coords and the ratings so would appreciate letting me know if there are any problems.
