Knowles Auxiliary Air Field #1

In addition to the Hobbs Army Air Field, the Army built 6 satellite airfields in the Hobbs vicinity. These were large fields with paved runways, but generally no buildings or facilities. The auxiliary fields were used for emergency landings, takeoff & landing practice and dispersal of aircraft in the event of attack. Most are long abandoned or converted to local airports (Hobbs & Wink, TX)

This geocache is located near Knowles Auxiliary Airfield #1, northeast of the main HAAF. It was a paved triangle shaped field with runways over 7000' long. Today it is on private land just off St. Rd 132. From the highway, all that is visible is a long line of trees. These grow along the edge of the runways where the sparse rain runoff accumulates.

The cache is placed along the highway right of way at a point close to the old runway. There is no need to enter on private land, so please respect the No Trespassing signs and do not go out to the runways.

There is nothing particularly tricky about this cache. It is placed to honor a local historic place.

Slainte Mhath!
