Waving Hello on the
highway
A Kansas Heartland Geocache
"When was the first time you
two met each other?"
I used to think that it was
the day when a mutual friend of ours asked me if I wanted to meet
her. "Sure!" So we stopped by where she worked and I got to
introduce myself to her. She was not happy with our mutual friend
because she didn't have any warning that we were coming and hadn't
"done her hair" or put on any make-up or any of that nonsense that
women do to impress a guy. That didn't matter to me; I was very,
very, very...very impressed. After that day life was awesome. We
dated. We got married.
Then one day, after being
married for a while, we were talking and she was reminiscing about
years gone by. She said she used to drive to work in her mom's LTD.
That phrase echoed in my head, driving to work in her mom's
LTD. Now where did I hear that before, driving to work in
her mom's LTD? YES! Now I remember! Wow! That's
amazing!
I asked my wife if she
remembered a certain incident that happened a long time ago. One
evening I was being driven back into Wichita on U.S. 81 Highway,
also known as South Broadway for those familiar with the Wichita
area. The driver was closing in on another car in front of us and
recognized that car. "Hey! That's my friend. She's driving to
work in her mom's LTD." (That's where I remembered the
words.)
I told the driver to pull up
beside the car in front of us, like we were going to pass but to
hesitate so that we were side-by-side. I didn't know who the
driver's friend was, but I was going to tease her anyway, since
this was a friend of the driver. The driver said that this was a
new car and that she might not recognize the car.
We pulled up beside the LTD
and I watched to see what her reaction was going to be. She looked
over with a face like, "What is wrong with this car beside me?" She
didn't recognize the driver. Probably because the first thing she
saw when she looked over was me. I waved at her with my smiley face
up close to the window. Caught by surprise, she smiled and turned
away to look at the road in front of her. We stayed there beside
her car. After a few seconds she looked again. I was still watching
so I waved to her again. I saw that she laughed and again turned to
look straight ahead. This time she put up a hand beside her face as
if to show that she wasn't going to look anymore...but she did. So
I waved again! She was laughing but she stopped looking at me. She
just wouldn't look over anymore. Now what? I told the driver to
pull up some. We pulled ahead so that our car was barely ahead of
hers. We were still in the lane of oncoming traffic but there
wasn't any traffic coming. I rolled my window down, unbuckled my
seat belt, and climbed halfway out of the window so that my
waistline was resting on the car door. Going down the highway, the
wind was blowing pretty good. I looked back at her and waved real
big. She couldn't ignore me anymore now. Ha! She was laughing. Then
we finally had to get out of the oncoming lane and finish passing.
We drove off and headed out into the darkness.
Yes, my wife definitely
remembered that night. So after being married for awhile, we found
out how that was actually the first time our lives had crossed. And
to think, looking back, that this guy sticking out of the window
was who she was going to end up marrying. She's so
crazy.
