Geocache Description:

THE ABOVE COORDS ARE BOGUS. You will need to complete the puzzle to locate the cache.

Enfield, the oldest town in Halifax County, was founded in 1740, although settlement started prior to 1725.

There are many stories as to how Enfield got its' name. Some believe the original name was Huckleberry Swamp, due to the low swampland and many huckleberry bushes which grew in the area. A drive southward from Enfield on Highway 301 and you'll see swampland on either side of the roadway. Others believe the town was named for Enfield, England a Common practice to name Colonial towns after villages back in England. Others say it was named for an inn which was locatd in a field on the stageline which passed through the area, thence the name 'Inn-field.'

In 1896 the economy in Enfield boomed with the opening of the Enfield Tobacco Market. Many new businesses were established as the economy grew. The Bank of Enfield, the oldest bank in Halifax County, was also in start up at this tiem.

As the tobacco market gave way to newer towns sprouting up, peanuts soon became the leading agricultural market in Enfield. The many buying and cleaning stations for peanuts soon made Enfield the world's largest raw peanut market.

Enfield was the county seat of Edgecombe County before the establishment of Halifax county. It remained the seat of Edgecombe county until 1758. Halifax county was then formed and the town of Halifax was established.

Enfield's history carries the event of the 'Enfield riot', one to the earliest political actions against the British tyranny. In January of 1759, Francis Corbin, who was Lord Granville's land agent was seized by a group of backwoodsmen and brought to Enfield. He was forced to give bond to return illegal fees that had been collected. A group of citizens expressed the same sentiments against the British tyranny on May 14, 1759. Several of the rioters were jailed but soon released when an irate mob of citizens broke into the jail and freed them. It is believed that the actions of these men were a precursor to the Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776.
