Geocache Description:

Like many older cemeteries, Bilbo Cemetery is tucked away within a contemporary setting. Many people do not know of its existence. This cemetery is the burial site for the “Father of Lake Charles”, John Jacob Ryan, Jr., and other early pioneers. You will also see some remarkable statues here.

This location was also an ancient Indian village, as well as an early U. S. Army military post.

The plaque says "1829 Cantonment Atkinson 1832 ... A military post established by the federal government for the protection of Louisiana against illicit border warfare following the Louisiana Purchase"

The cemetery is approached by driving east along the I-10 frontage road (N. Lakeshore Drive). One-way streets prevent access from other directions. At the curve, pull off the access road and park on the gravel lane to your right. You can find the cache without entering the cemetery. Afterward, feel free to visit this sacred place.
