Geocache Description:

Nice 3-mile walk through the woods with some moderate grade climbs. Mostly on old roads. Can be done in winter except in deep snow. Published location is for parking area.

View Somewhere in Bucky's Hunting Ground

Start at the end of the pavement on Worthley Hill Road in Goffstown, NH. Parking is at the posted coordinates of N 43° 00.353', W 071° 35.367' where the pavement ends. Note the interesting architecture of the home at the end of the road. Please park on the side of the road not blocking driveways. DO NOT park in the paved turn-around area marked "NO PARKING."

This area is owned by the town of Goffstown and private land owners who have opened it to public use. It is used heavily in winter as a snowmobile trail. Note that this area is also used by hunters in season so WEAR BLAZE ORANGE. The original cache hiders (W42.COM) used to walk their beagle "Bucky" here. Bucky has gone to his happy hunting ground and this cache is in his memory.

This area was very well developed in the early 1800's with a school house, a mill and several homesteads. There are a number of abandoned roads and cellar holes in the area. It was known as the Goffstown Village South Side, School District No. 1. If you are interested, visit http://www.nh.searchroots.com/HillsboroughCo/Goffstown/genealogy.html where there are links to documents including maps of the area showing some of the homesteads on this site.

Trails are well defined and in many places are more dirt roads than trails. This hunt is about a 3-mile walk, with some moderate hills. In wet weather there are a few spots that can get pretty muddy. All of the waypoints are within 30 feet of the main trail. The final is about 200 feet off the trail. The waypoints and cache can be found in winter in all but the heaviest snow; most trails are pretty well packed by snowmobiles, however snowshoes may be helpful at times!

To determine the coordinates for the final of the multicache, you will need to visit six waypoints to collect information from each waypoint to determine the cache coordinates of N 43° 00.ABC W 71° 35.DEF.

The first waypoint is an object at N43 00.155 W071 35.371. On this object you will find an obvious pair of two-digit numbers. The last digit of the bottom two-digit number on the object is "A" in the final cache coordinates.

As you visit waypoints (brass tags) for #2-6, record the information from the brass tag at each location to determine one of the digits of the final coordinates of this multi, as follows:
  • Waypoint #1 pair of two-digit numbers on object:   ** *A
  • Waypoint #2 brass tag:   E**   ***
  • Waypoint #3 brass tag:   ***   **C
  • Waypoint #4 brass tag:   F**   ***
  • Waypoint #5 brass tag:   **B   ***
  • Waypoint #6 brass tag:   ***   **D

Bucky's Hunting Ground final: N 43° 00.ABC W 71° 35.DEF

If you want to confirm your coordinates, the "checksum" is A+B+C+D+E+F = 32.

(Note that the "checksum" could be used to compute the final coordinates even if you are unable to find one of the waypoints -- that is intentional on our part, to allow would-be-finders to still complete the multi-cache even if one of the waypoints can't be found.)

The cache is a well-hidden ammo box with ample room for trade goodies.

Cache History:

This cache was placed by W42.COM on September 10, 2005 and first found in the wee hours of the morning (2:47am) on September 11, 2005 by the solid-rock-seekers.

A couple years later, on October 28, 2007, W42.COM replaced all the waypoints with more durable ones. The cache was maintained regularly over the next five years through 2012, including replacing the final container when it went missing after logging operations. However, after the original hider moved from the area, some of the waypoints became illegible and the final container went missing.

In December 2021, the solid-rock-seekers offered to adopt the cache and return it to play. The cache was re-worked to enable placement of more multi-caches in the area, to simplify the cache by eliminating the alternate "wimp" route, and to add a "bonus cache" to encourage cachers who previously found Bucky's Hunting Ground to visit the new waypoints in order to find the bonus cache.
