Taylor Head Provincial Park is one of the Kool Kats' favorite
places to hike. It is located in Spry Bay, near Sheet Harbour. This
is the location of our newest cache.
Taylor Head is about an hour's drive from Halifax, and 11 km
from Sheet Harbour. The entrance to the park is right on highway 7.
To begin, park at N 44 48.456 W 62 33.716, which is the last
parking lot. There are a couple different approaches to the cache.
We walked clockwise to the cache taking the Spry Bay Trail and the
Headland Trail. The cache is near the middle of the Headland Trail
at the tip of Taylor Head. You can also begin by taking the Beach
Walk and continuing over the rocks to meet up with the Headland
Trail. Some of the trail is through the woods and some goes over
beach rocks. When travelling over the rocks watch for the trail
signs. The trail is well-marked but the terrain can be difficult
and is mostly uneven. There are also places where there are holes
you can step in, mostly off the trail. Please take care when doing
this cache. To see a map of the trails, and for more information on
Taylor Head, please see their brochure. The
map is available in the park brochure on the site. There are also
maps available at the start of the trails.
The hike is a somewhat lengthy one. It took us a little less
than an hour to reach the cache. It also took a little less than an
hour to return, completing the loop. There are not a lot of flies
in the area since it is right on the ocean.
The park is open from May to October. It may be possible to
still do the cache off-season but if the gate is locked it is an
additional 5 km walk to the parking lot from the gate. We do not
recommend trying the cache in the snow. When we've been here in the
late spring parts of the trail have been quite muddy or wet.
The cache is a small lock n lock (thanks Scurvy Scavengers).
Because it is not camo'd at all and very close to the trail please
make sure to re-hide the cache well. Absolutely no bushwhacking is
required to do this cache. Afterwards you can take a swim at the
beach near the start of the trails. It is a nice beach for swimming
but the water temperatures are probably the coldest on this side of
the province.
