Hidden Treasures of North Florida
Madison
County
Background: In the heart of downtown Madison is Four
Freedoms Park, home to the Four Freedoms monument. President
Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned the monument in honor of the
late Captain Colin P. Kelly, a Madison native and the first U.S.
war hero of World War II. Four Freedoms Park was the site of a
blockhouse erected to protect women, children and the elderly
during the threatening period 1835 – 1842. Afterwards, the building
was used as an informal courthouse. Finally, Madison Livingston
donated the land to the city to be developed as a park.
Other sites to explore: Check out the historic district
including Four Freedoms Wedding Chapel with massive stained glass
windows – or O’Toole’s Herb Farm just north of downtown.
