This site was designated as a Milwaukee Landmark in 1974 in
recognition of the unique multi ethnic fishing village here during
the 19th and 20th centuries.
The park is named after the Kaszube region, located on the
Baltic coast of what is now Poland. People from this region left
the political upheavals of their homeland and settled on what
became known as Jones Island.
This small park, about 5,000 square feet was rarely visited or
kept up. A local City of Milwaukee worker named Ken Kupferschmidt
began taking care of the park on his own time.
He had heard family stories of the former islanders holding a
get-together once a year. He and his brothers began holding an
annual picnic in 2000.
Ken Kupferschmidt passed away this past spring. This years
picnic was planned for August 6th and was dedicated to his
memory.
