This is the forty-sixth of a series, the "Caerphilly Collection", that will explore the whole Borough Council area. Take a walk along one of the "rural" sections of this canal to get to this cache, in a quite small plastic box. A circular walk of less than a mile, with about 100' of ascent,
is suggested. Most of the route is on good surfaces, while the rest is on field paths. For security reasons, the last few steps to the cache require a little of the pioneer spirit.
The Caerphilly Collection is distinguished with a unique CC number and is made up of 50 caches. The caches vary in difficulty and type and usually have other "C" word connections - castle, cheese, coal, canal, etc. There may even be Cryptic Clues for Clever Clogs! The current Caerphilly unitary authority grew out of the former Rhymney Valley and Islwyn Councils and stretches from the outskirts of Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Brecon Beacons, north of Rhymney. Despite a past dominated by coal and heavy industry, it has a diverse history and varied and dramatic scenery. We hope you will enjoy exploring it with us.
Towards the end of the Collection is CC48 The Accumulator, the location of which is given in coded form. The translation details of the code are distributed around the whole Collection, but only about a third of the caches will contain a piece of the code, which is on the back of the Log Book. To do the Accumulator, you will need to keep a note of each piece of code that you find. Unless you are very lucky, you will need to find the majority of the Collection in order to do the Accumulator. The Accumulator cache is hidden in an area of difficult terrain and demanding navigation, with a 5,4½ rating.
More correctly, this waterway should be called the Crumlin Arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal - but we needed to abbreviate the title and opted for a form that gave another meaning for CC. The canal is over 200 years old and originally linked the Ebbw Valley at Crumlin to Newport Docks: with a network of tramroads feeding to it, its area of influence was much greater. After falling into disuse and many years of neglect, the last forty years or so have seen some restorative efforts and the Islwyn Canal Association has primary objectives of saving and maintaining the canal and restoring it from Cwmcarn to Rogerstone. While this objective is supported by the Council, there is one big problem - money! Hopefully this glimpse of the canal will convince you that the dream is, at least, worthwhile.
Parking is available at the Risca Leisure Centre (N 51 36.279 W 003 04.226), although you may find other convenient starting points. We suggest this one as it enables a pleasant circular walk to the cache to be followed ... and will let you see the "verge museum" of marine and agricultural artefacts!
