Geocache Description:

Hidden fairly close to the main road up Jebel Akhdar, I hope 'Mountain Goat' will encourage you to visit this beautiful part of Oman. As you would expect from a site approximately 2165m ASL the view is impressive.

Access to the region used to need a previously arranged pass, but just a couple of days before our visit this rule was relaxed and we only had to show our vehicle registration and driving licence at the roadside police checkpoint. Although all the major roads are blacktop a 4x4 vehicle remains a requirement.

In Birkat al Mauz head roughly north from the junction at N22 55.385 E57 40.030. This road leads you towards the mountains, passing through the checkpoint before you start the serious climb. There are a number of laybys and parking places on the way where you can enjoy the view or a picnic, and one of these near the top at N23 03.173 E57 43.682 is the place to stop.

From the corner of this carpark climb the slope towards the twin power poles then make your way virtually straight up the hill. A slight zigzag route uses a series of shallow slopes as you make your way to the top - this is more a walk than a scramble as proved by my mother who helped us place the cache!

Looking back after climbing the hill you will see a house / goat pens. The cache is out of sight but please be a little careful when searching for it. It is in a medium sized food container and when placed contained the following items -
