Atop Mt Emerald on the Great Dividing Range near Tolga and Atherton. 8-10km return walk to visit the cache, 4-6 hours, 350m ascent.
Mt Emerald is a popular bushwalking mountain on the tablelands which also has a plane wreck near the summit. In 1991 many local north QLD counsellors and the mayor or Cairns lost their lives when their plane crashed into the Great Dividing Range. The main walking track to the summit passes by what is left of the wreckage.
Best place to park for the walk is at the end of Anderson Road - turn west from the highway near the old Army Hospital at Rocky Creek then follow this road (turning to dirt) for about 5km towards the mountains. Turn left onto Anderson Road. Six-figure grid Reference for walk carpark is 333 973.
Cache is a 1 litre plastic fruit container with green lid. When hidden it contained logbook, pen, pencil and sharpener, kids playing cards, finger puppet, key tag, hackysack and bubble blower.
