Port Salerno Welcome Wagon Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

JL_HSTRE: Checked on the final location today. It has gotten badly overgrown since the cache moved to this spot after the destruction of its previous location.

I think it's time to archive this one. It had a good long run which I was happy to extend by adopting. Traditionals periodically get placed in the park too, and this final causes proximity issues without its presence being obvious.

Original Description From 2005
People are moving to Florida at the rate of approximately 6,000 people per week. One day last year, I was one of them. Caching helped me find a lot of parks that I would otherwise not know about. However, when it came time to find the practical things I needed, I was on my own.

This cache is designed to first introduce new residents to some things they will need, and then show them someplace that they will want to visit often.

The above coordinates will take you to a location in downtown Port Salerno. First look directly across the street to see one of the buildings that you will need to know about in your new home. Notice that there are also some good restaurants and other practical establishments nearby.

Now check out your immediate surroundings. You are in what may be the tiniest park ever. It is easy to miss and you would never notice it just driving by. It seems to be past its peak of popularity.

Short History of Port Salerno
Port Salerno is an unincorporated town and census-designated place. In 2010, the population was a little over 10,000. It was founded as "Salerno" in the 1920s, named after Salerno, Italy. "Port" was added to the name in 1960. The community surrounds Manatee Pocket, a small branch of the St. Lucie River. The small downtown area includes numerous restaurants, marinas, a few parks, a post office (34992), and a fire station. Numerous fishing tournaments are based out of Port Salerno and it hosts an annual seafood festival. Old Dixie Highway passes through (and doubles as A1A in this area) as does the Florida East Coast Railroad.

Cache Location
The final cache can be found at: N 27 0A.BCD W 80 11.EFG

A = the number of times the letter A appears on the right hand “page” of the “book”

B = the number of words on the left hand “page” of the “book” (do not count the numbers – words only)

C = the number of times the letter W appears in the “book”

D = the total number of monuments in the park, including the “book” (look carefully, some are harder to spot that others. The “book” only counts as one monument. Benches are NOT monuments.)

E = the number of letters in Mrs. Paxton’s first name

F = the number of times the letter L appears in Fred’s last name

G = the last digit in Adelene’s age when she died

IMPORTANT: the final has moved from it's original location. Take your solution then add .004 to the North and add .015 to the West. GeoCheck has been updated to reflect the new location.

The final is within 2 miles of the posted coordinates. There is a sidewalk the whole way if you wish to bike, but you probably want to drive.

The cache was originally a one gallon, screw top, camoed Rubbermaid container containing items you might need if you’ve just moved into new digs and a couple of toys for the kids (to keep them occupied while you unpack). It was replaced in September 2013 with a camo'd lock-n-lock at the same location. As of Nov 2016, it is now a preform at a new location.

This is not intended to be a particularly tricky cache, and both parts should be easy to locate. Trees at the final stage can frustrate your signal a bit.
